Gustav Haeberle: A master architect who shaped Bamberg – and a film that honors him

Bamberg is a city with a rich history and impressive architecture. One of the architects who significantly influenced the cityscape is Gustav Haeberle. While his name is less well known outside our company today, he created numerous buildings that still shape the face of Bamberg today. Among other things, he was responsible for the construction of the Weyermann® complex, which includes the malt factory of his brother-in-law, our founder Johann Baptist Weyermann.

Michael Hemm is someone who cares deeply about Bamberg’s beauty and historical heritage. He has lived and loved this city for over 40 years, and his keen eye for detail and endless curiosity have made him a true connoisseur of Bamberg. With great commitment and a local connection, he has dedicated himself to the task of honoring Haeberle’s life and work in a documentary film.

Hemm sets a cinematic memorial

In his 25-minute film, Michael Hemm portrays the architect Gustav Haeberle, who worked in Bamberg from 1877 until his death in 1930. Haeberle created countless buildings that still characterize Bamberg’s cityscape today. We are particularly proud that his works include the impressive building complex of our Weyermann® malthouse. But the Palas of the Altenburg and today’s Clavius-Gymnasium also bear his signature.

The film is more than just a documentary. It is a tribute to a man whose tireless creativity and magnificent buildings are often overlooked. Hemm succeeds in highlighting Haeberle’s significance for Bamberg and at the same time building a bridge to the present day. Haeberle’s mindful building in a historic city, his humanistic architecture – these are values that can still inspire us today.

Michael Hemm received valuable help from Bamberg historian Karin Dengler-Schreiber, who provided the basis for the film with her research and also recorded the texts. In addition, Weyermann® company historian Christian Kestel provided him with information and pictures.

A Weyermann® evening at the KUFA

On the occasion of the premiere of the film as part of the Short Film Festival, we took the opportunity to organize a Weyermann® Academy event with our employees. Together we attended the film screening at the cultural fabric KUFA and then rounded off the evening with interesting conversations, delicious food and drinks at the Sternla Gasthaus. A big thank you to our management for the generous invitation!
